3 Reasons Ikea is Great For Lady Boomers

by Diane Horn on March 5, 2014

Why am I writing about Ikea?  Because I happened to go there today and I had one of those “aha” moments. I haven’t been inside an Ikea for a good 5 or 6 years and I just wanted to check it out.    ikea sign

At a recent cooking class my instructor told us she liked to pick up interesting little serving items at Ikea ( like using a small plate meant to hold votive tea light candles to serve different tasting salts).  So that was my alleged reason for stopping by.  It seemed such a classy thing to have out during a dinner party, if ever I have one.

I had forgotten that once inside the door I was a captive buyer for the time it would take me to circumnavigate the entire store.  This is something that really bothered my husband whenever I suggested we stop and go in whenever we saw an Ikea sign on the highway.  He would utter a disgruntled “ok”and then somehow manage to miss the right exit to get off.

I really do understand why most men don’t like shopping there. It’s not a quick stop and it’s not an easy place to find what you are looking for.  It’s meant for people looking for a place to spend the day during the cold dark Swedish winters.  It’s also a good place to wander pushing a baby stroller…..or looking for that perfect wall unit you see in their catalogues

I am none of these but I was totally drawn in by the explosion of color and the sample decorator rooms set up everywhere.  Instead of stacks and piles of products I was drawn in by all the possibilities and their use of accessories.

And I am an accessory lover.  This is when I had my “aha” moment and decided Ikea might be the perfect place to go for inexpensive but high impact home accessories.

Reason #1 Color                              ikea purple

For example Pantone has picked Radiant Orchid as the Color of the Year 2014.  Imagine my surprise to find many purple pops of color throughout the store. ..including vases, pillows and candles.

I love the color purple an wear it a lot but a little goes a long way.  I hear it’s the color of healing and creativity.

Reason #2  Hang Your Accessories

Next I noticed all of the interesting wall hooks, rods and picture frames throughout.  I believe if you have collectibles you love stashed away in drawers you should take them out find a way to display them. I could  see scarves draped on an arrangement of hooks, and precious mementos framed on the wall.  I can see skeins of yarn in glass vases and bowels.  Plus, you can rotate your “treasures” anytime you want.

Reason #3 Lighting

Now for my third suggestion……….lighting!  ikea lampshadeAgain remember those long dark Swedish winters and the need to add brightness everywhere.  The lighting department in Ikea is huge and has all different types of lamps and shades including adorable little strip lights that add surprise sparkles of light. Mood lighting is great for just what it suggest, setting a mood.  We can all use a little of that!

The best part of my visit today was that what I bought won’t need to be returned because it’s the wrong size and most importantly won’t involve my husband and a power drill…  just some little things here and there!

Try it and let me know if you buy anything!
