Do you wear black most of the time? Why?

I am so glad the calendar says it’s spring even if the weather doesn’t seem to be paying attention yet.  whistlers_mother

I am tired of wearing coats and jackets and my favorite black corduroy pants everyday.

I am ready to switch my “default” attire to something more colorful.

But, here’s the issue.  I seem to gravitate towards black in every season.

I’m wondering if you do the same.

When did the memo come around telling women over a certain age they should only dress in black or neutrals?

I don’t remember when I got the memo but since I look washed out in white, beige and gray, I have been gravitating towards black.

When I lived in San Francisco in the 1970’s I remember going over to Oakland to an artist’s studio to get “my colors” done.

Fabric swatches were held up to my face ( makeup free and in perfect lighting). Each was labeled “ok” or “no way”.

I was given a personalized color wheel and a small wallet of fabric swatches to use when I went shopping. I actually used these as a guideline for many years.

Shopping became a scavenger hunt of sorts.  And it was fun!

When did all of that change?  It started to change when I moved to Washington D.C. (and got married) in the early 1980’s. I felt I needed to look professional and serious like everyone else.

Of course I was a Dental Hygienist who wore scrubs everyday.  So much for serious but I did look professional.

Fast forward 30 years and I am stumped once again.  I’ve started my own coaching business and even called it The Vibrant Lady Boomer to inspire women to rediscover their best and reinvent the rest.

I am once again searching for ways to show up to myself and others as a visible vibrant women who wants to make a difference in the world. I now this isn’t just about clothes.

It’s about feeling passionate and alive and letting that radiate from within.

It’s about being healthy and energetic and the best “ageless” version of yourself.  But I still find it challenging.

So here are some of the questions I’m asking right now.

When did the fun go out of wearing colorful clothes?

When did I go from wearing black to look chic to wearing black so I could hide out and blend in?

p.s.  I just spent an hour rummaging through my drawers for my little wallet of color swatches and voila’ I found them.  Here they are…….

My dramatic colors

My understated colors

My neutrals
