The New Normal For Lady Boomers….It’s Not Just Early Bird Dinners

by Diane Horn on December 11, 2012

I was walking my puppy Gabbie this morning when I had an “aha” moment. I was thinking about the tv show “The New Normal” and how it aims to challenge the existing norms. Aging is one of the topics I think about frequently. I like to challenge myself to come up with new ways to approach this inevitable process without defining myself by a number.

All the old rules need to be challenged and thrown away.

It used to be if you were over 50 and stood out from the crowd you were seen as eccentric. I don’t want to be a member of any club that says i need to “behave” in a certain way. I tried that in middle school when I wanted to look like everyone else. It just has never worked for me. Now I am glad it never did or else I would still be trying to “blend in”.

Advertisers don’t know what to do with us.

Lady Boomers lead the market in having the most disposable income as well as making most of the purchasing decisions in a family. But, I think most marketers are still following the old rules. On any given day my mail might contain solicitations from an “over 55” living community showing a smiling couple with silver bouffant hair riding in a golf cart to a tranquil looking brochure from a funeral home asking “Have You Taken Care of That Final Step Yet”?

Turn on the tv or open any magazine and the ads run the gamut from miracle anti-aging products, anti-depressants and weight loss solutions. Let’s not forget all of the sex enhancing products as well as” lunch time plastic surgery options” geared to our generation.

So, my message to all of us is to live your life the way you want to. If that means saving money where you can (like early bird dinners) so you can spend it on traveling, DO IT!

DON’T buy into advertising because you think it is age appropriate. Someone else’s vision of you doesn’t have to be your own.

The New Normal is that there is no normal!
